Running your boat in saltwater exposes internal cooling channels to salt deposits, mineral buildup, and corrosion. Over time, salt crystals crystallize inside the water jackets, restricting coolant flow and leading to engine overheating.
Follow this straightforward post-trip flushing routine:
- Connect to Fresh Water: Attach a garden hose to your engine’s dedicated flushing port, or use quality dual-flow earmuffs over the lower unit intake screens. Ensure fresh water is turned on at full pressure before starting the engine.
- Monitor the Tell-Tale Stream: Once the engine is idling, confirm a steady stream of water is coming from the indicator outlet (pisser). If the stream is weak or missing, turn off the engine immediately to check for salt blockages or impeller wear.
- Flush for a Full 10 to 15 Minutes: Allow the thermostat to open so fresh water circulates through the entire block, washing away internal salt deposits.
- Never rev the engine while flushing on earmuffs, and always let the engine cool down before disconnecting the hose.
